The Benefits Of Using LED Lighting In The Home
Light Emitting Diodes, or LED lights in short, present the latest lighting source in the marketplace today. This recent creation has totally changed lighting by changing the way we produce brightness. Instead of the conventional method of generating light through heat, LEDs create light through a process called electroluminescence.
However, the technology behind LED has made it higher priced than most alternatives. In fact, when compared with candles, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, LED light bulbs cost significantly more. But in spite of being more expensive than other lighting options, the many benefits of it provide more than enough reasons for consumers to try it out at home.
1) Lower Energy Consumption
LED light bulbs do not require much energy in order to create light. They create light in a process known as electroluminescence instead of changing electrical energy into heat (like in candles or incandescent bulbs). Simply put, it changes the state of an electron to cause it glow. This method eliminates, or at least significantly lessens, the amount of energy wasted when producing light. Also, since the structure and volume is much less than that of standard bulbs, less wattage is needed to produce the same amount of brightness.
2) Longer Functional life
As compared to other lighting alternatives, LED light bulbs usually last longer from around 25,000 to 50,000 hours subject to temperature and current settings. Some LED light bulbs even take 100,000 hours before full failure is achieved. This is because LED lighting experience very little wear and tear unlike other lighting sources. They do not have any shortening wicks, burning filaments, or consumable vapors.
Fluorescent bulbs are reported to last only for 10,000 to 15,000 hours.
3) Smaller in size
Since the mechanism behind LED depends only on the size of the semiconductor chip, there is no need for voluminous confinements. The smaller the chip is, the smaller the LED light produced. This, however, does not always translate to luminous intensity. It does not mean that because LED light bulbs are smaller, they are dimmer than lights produced by other sources.
Instead, LED lighting, depending on the type and function, can sometimes be brighter than other sources of light.
4) Durability
As there are in essence no moving parts in LED light bulbs, they are more resilient to shocks and vibrations. Also, because their structure has gotten rid of the need for glass (and other fragile elements), they are generally more robust and tougher than bulbs, this way making it the most durable source of lighting.
5) Speedier switching
When it comes to fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, light is produced as a result of superheating a medium. This is different for LED lighting. As soon as electricity flows through the chip, electroluminescence almost immediately happens. This allows LED light bulbs to be switched on and off faster than other sources of light. In fact, it can achieve full brightness within microseconds.
6) No side effects
LED lamps do not contain Mercury vapor unlike fluorescent lamps. They are thus safer to dispose of and less toxic than normal fluorescent bulbs
The aforementioned are some of the great advantages of using LED lighting in your house.
