Childhood Insomnia - an increasing problem
Experts attribute the increase in childhood insomnia to many factors relating to the home, school and social neighborhood. Insomnia or a sleeping disorder is a problem that affects not only the old and young but childhood insomnia is becoming an increasing problem in the United States in the past few years. Possible causes - Stress - The child could be stressed with several things like school worries, marital problems between parents, problems adjusting with siblings or a new neighborhood, a bully in the school or neighborhood and more. Find out the reason for the stress and get solutions for his/her childhood insomnia. - Constipation - Childhood insomnia can be reduced by checking the eating and eliminating process of the child to inculcate healthy eating and eliminating patterns. - Pain - Pain related to muscle cramps, gastric problems, asthma, heartburn, tooth ache and other physical problems can also lead to childhood insomnia. - Sleep disturbances - Bad dreams and bed wetting can occur because of imaginary monsters in the closet. This unfounded fear should not be rebuked or discarded by saying that there are no ghosts or monsters but handled with love and care to get rid of childhood insomnia on a permanent basis. You can get your child to sleep in your bedroom till the child overcomes the problem. Solutions for Childhood Insomnia 1. Bedtime Stories - One of the best ways of dealing with childhood insomnia is to read bedtime stories for the child to relax the child at night before putting him/her to sleep. The soothing sound of your voice actually helps cure childhood insomnia and in most cases the child would fall asleep long before completing the story. However make sure to avoid scary stories as the purpose of curing childhood insomnia would not work then. 2. Set a Routine Time for going to bed - To help your child overcome childhood insomnia set a specific time everyday for your child to go to bed. The human body responds well to schedules and rhythms, hence if you set a certain time daily your body will automatically send a message to the brain that it is time to sleep. 3. Eliminate the causes mentioned above - To solve childhood insomnia check that your child is not facing stress at school, home or in the neighborhood, check that your child has sufficient physical exercise daily to put him to sleep at night, monitor their eating and eliminating patterns to rule out constipation and other painful physical conditions.
